Flea Market JPDISCOVER JAPAN’S LOCAL MARKETS

Before you go

A little preparation before you leave makes the day much easier.

Check the latest information before you go

Dates, times and venues can change. Some organizers decide on the day itself and announce it at the top of their website. As the date approaches, check the organizer’s official page for the latest notice. Keep the check date of any information on this site in mind too.

On a rainy day, check whether it is on

Outdoor markets can be canceled or postponed in bad weather. Check the organizer’s page the evening before and again in the morning. If you do go on a rainy day, bring plastic bags and a towel to keep your purchases dry.

The closing time can come earlier

Even when a closing time is posted, stalls can pack up a little early if they sell out or the weather turns. If you have a particular item in mind, arriving at opening time is the safest choice.

Go in the morning, or in the afternoon?

In the morning, the most stock is out, and stalls begin to pack up little by little in the afternoon. Popular items sell out early, so for a bargain, the early morning is best. After lunch the crowd can thin out and you can look at things at a relaxed pace. Choose based on what you are looking for.

Getting there by train or by car

Many markets are a walk from the nearest station, and the walk differs by venue. Compare the directions on the organizer’s page with a map before you go, so you do not get lost. Decide on your return train in advance too.

If you are driving, check on the organizer’s page whether venue parking is available. The number of spaces can be limited, and there may be conditions for use. Without venue parking you will need a nearby paid lot, which fills up at busy times.
